EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) & Fuel EU Maritime (FEUM) Regulations: January 2026
Dear Customers,
As previously announced by the European Union and subsequently by DFDS, the scope of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) — which was first implemented in 2024 with 40% coverage obligation and continued in 2025 at 70% level — will increase to 100% of reported emissions in 2026 with the transition to its third phase. The 50% reduction applied to emissions occurred on voyages involving non-EU ports, which also affects the Mediterranean Business Unit routes, will continue to apply under the same conditions.
In addition, the EU Maritime Fuel Regulation (FEUM), which has entered into force in 2025 with the objective of reducing the greenhouse gas intensity of fuels used by 2% initially, and progressively achieving an 80% reduction by 2050, will continue to be implemented throughout 2026.
Further information regarding EU ETS and FEUM can be accessed via this link.
In accordance with European Union regulations, the combined ETS (Emissions Trading System) and EU Maritime Fuel (FEUM) charges applicable to standard vehicles and containers transported on our routes have been determined as of 1 January 2026 as below. These charges are calculated in line with the updated 2026 ETS & FEUM scale published on our website and by considering developments in the carbon markets during the relevant period.
In accordance with the applicable scale, on the 21st day of each month, the ETS pricing information—valid for a 30-day period starting from the 1st day of the following month—will be communicated to you via email. Changes in carbon allowance prices related to the implementation of ETS can be monitored on this webpage.

Best Regards,
DFDS Business Unit Mediterranean
